Formed around 29 million years ago in the Great Sand Sea of the Sahara, Libyan Desert Glass is a rare natural silica glass created under extraordinary heat and pressure.

Its exact formation has fascinated scientists for decades. Current evidence points towards a major extraterrestrial impact event, powerful enough to melt material at the Earth's surface and leave behind the translucent yellow-to-golden glass found across a limited area of the Western Desert of Egypt.

But its story doesn't end with geology.

Thousands of years later, a piece of this unusual desert glass was carved into the scarab at the centre of one of Tutankhamun's pectorals—connecting a material formed millions of years before humans existed with one of Ancient Egypt's most recognisable treasures.

Each OOAK piece is individually selected and sold by weight. Natural variations in colour, transparency, texture and surface markings are part of the material's character.

Keep it somewhere you regularly pause or reflect: on your desk, beside a journal, within a crystal collection or in a personal meditation space.

Hold it while setting an intention around confidence, decision-making or a new chapter.

For collectors, its unusual geological formation and connection with Ancient Egypt also make Libyan Desert Glass an interesting specimen beyond its metaphysical associations.

Libyan Desert Glass is a natural glass. Although suitable for handling and display, avoid dropping it onto hard surfaces or exposing it to sudden temperature changes.

Clean gently with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals.

Crystals should never be used to replace proper medical treatment or used in lieu of seeking professional medical help.  Crystals are should not be used for children under 3 years old or pet without supervision.

FAQs

Our crystals do not routinely come with independent laboratory certificates. We provide information on the material, reported origin and known treatments based on our sourcing records, examination and research.

For customers who require independent verification, testing can be arranged through a qualified external gemological laboratory where appropriate, at an additional cost.

We believe in transparent information rather than certificates that do not provide meaningful independent verification.

At OOAKSTONES, we carefully curate our collection and believe in transparent sourcing. Natural crystals may undergo treatments such as heating or dyeing, which we disclose when known. Please refer to each product's material and Known Treatment information for details.
