Carved from fluorite and mounted as a pair of open wings, this statement piece turns the natural bands, color shifts and translucency of the stone into something almost architectural.

Fluorite is traditionally associated with clarity, focus and seeing situations from a wider perspective. Here, the wing form adds another layer — movement, freedom and the courage to move beyond what has become familiar.

Place it somewhere natural or directional light can pass through the fluorite, then watch what happens as the light changes throughout the day. Backlighting reveals color zoning, transparency, inclusions and details that are much harder to see from the surface alone.

At first you see the shape and the overall color. Then the light comes through and suddenly there is so much more — bands of color, areas of transparency, inclusions and details hidden inside the stone.

Fluorite is known for its extraordinary range of colors. Different colors can occur within the same crystal, creating the natural zoning and banding that makes large polished fluorite pieces especially interesting to view from different angles.

Fluorite is a relatively soft mineral and should be handled with care. Keep the piece on a stable surface and avoid knocks, drops or contact with harder objects.

Clean gently with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners and prolonged exposure to strong direct sunlight, which may affect the color of some fluorite over time.

When moving the piece, support the base rather than lifting it by the wings.
