Natural Amethyst Cluster from Congo — Collector’s Selection

Look first at the formation that catches your eye.

Some pieces have larger dominant points and a more sculptural silhouette, while others have denser groupings of crystals. Color also shifts naturally from deep violet to softer translucent purple depending on the thickness of the crystal and the light.

For a piece like this, I would choose by formation first, then size. They are all beautiful Amethyst; what makes each one special is how the crystals grew together.

Display it somewhere the natural points can be seen from several angles — on a console, shelf, coffee table or desk.

Amethyst is also traditionally kept in bedrooms and meditation spaces for its association with calm and reflection.

For these particular clusters, I would give them some light. The strong purple color and translucency become much more visible when the light moves across the crystal faces.

I bought these because of the points.

Large Amethyst points with strong color are spectacular, but finding a cluster where those points have survived with minimal damage is another matter. My supplier knows what I look for, so I was able to see the batch early and have first pick.

I chose only five.

Not because there were only five available — because these were the five I wanted.

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. Its color comes primarily from trace iron within the quartz combined with natural irradiation during its geological formation.

The color of an individual cluster can vary considerably, even within the same specimen — from pale translucent lavender to concentrated violet where the crystal is thicker or more intensely colored.

Amethyst is relatively durable, but crystal points can chip if knocked against a hard surface.

Handle the specimen from its base rather than by individual points. Clean gently with a soft, dry brush or cloth.

Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which may gradually fade the purple color of Amethyst.

Crystals should never be used to replace proper medical treatment or used in lieu of seeking professional medical help.  Crystals are should not be used for children under 3 years old or pet without supervision.
