This white sage is sustainably harvested from the coastal mountains of California and is known for its strong aromatic properties.  What sage is sacred to many and has been used medicinally and ceremonial purpose for thousands of years.  Sage is used for purification, healing, calming and is often burned as a smudge stick or in smudge pots to cleanse a space of any negative energies that may be present.  This power is said to be released from the plant by burning of the leaves.

How to burn a smudge stick

Light the bundle and once a flame appears, blow it out or gently shake until embers appear and it starts to smoke.  Continue to hold the smudge stick or place it in a container with sand or salt to hold the smudge upright.  You can use your hand or a feather to direct the smoke over your body.  Visualize the smoke taking away any negative energy,  If indoor, it is recommended to open a window for the energy to escape.  To extinguish, invert smudge into the sand or salt to smother.

 

Curator's Note

With white sage, I care about where it comes from as much as how we use it.

White sage (Salvia apiana) has a long history of ceremonial use among Indigenous communities of Southern California. As it has become increasingly popular within the wider wellness world, concerns have also grown around the harvesting of wild populations.

The white sage I selected for OOAK is sustainably grown on private land rather than wild-harvested.

I also see smoke cleansing a little differently from the idea that simply burning something will magically remove everything negative around us. For me, the ritual creates a pause — a moment to consciously decide what we are ready to clear, reset or make space for.

The sage can be part of that ritual. The intention still comes from you.
